Acolytes
Acolytes at Redeemer are among the most important “engineers”
of our worship. They help to lift our worship off the page of the
Prayer Book and planning sheet and make it at act of the entire
community. Members of the parish of all ages have served as acolytes
at Redeemer. They generally serve once a month and are vital ministers
in our parish worship.
Adult
Education
Listening and learning, sharing and exposing ourselves to new ideas.
Sessions are at 9:15 on Sundays and there is also a Tuesday night
Book Group. Also, Redeemer hosts occasional Potluck programs which
incorporate topics such as racism, interfaith dialogue and ministry.
Altar Guild
Preparing the church for Sunday requires just an hour or so with
other Altar Guild members on Saturday morning, and a short time
after each service. There is also additional preparation for high
holidays and special occasions. The work visibly shows the love
we feel for our church and community.
Building Committee
This group has oversees and takes care of the beautiful Redeemer
spaces. They meet when needed – about every two months.
Centennial Committee
Redeemer’s Centennial Year is 2003. Here’s your chance
to join a new group to plan our celebration.
Choirs
“Choosing to sing in the choir is a way to witness my faith
through music.”
Redeemer enjoys the efforts of a Senior Choir and a Hand Bell Choir.
Senior Choir – Rehearsals are the first and third Wednesday evenings of the month, 8:10 pm to 9:30 pm and on Sunday mornings, 9:00 am to 10:15 am.
Hand Bell Choir – Rehearsals on an occasional basis.
Church
School
“The education of children – their minds and their souls
– has been a keystone binding our community together since
1900.”
The children of Redeemer are a constant source of pleasure and
delight for all of us, and guiding their spiritual development is
a responsibility we take to heart. The dedicated teachers of our
Church School provide religious training from pre-school through
high school, using the Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, and special
programs, like “Journey to Adulthood” as the basis for
their curriculum. And thanks to the recent renovation of our church
undercroft, Church School sessions now take place in comfortable
new classrooms.
Child care (infants to age 3), Sundays 10:30 – 11:45 am
Children in Liturgy (Age 4 – 3rd grade), Sundays 10:30 am
Intermediate Class (grades 3-6), Sundays 10:30 am
Youth Group (grades 7-12), Sunday mornings, special events, and
overnight activities as announced.
Finance
This committee determines strategies for how we manage our financial
resources.
Grounds
If you like to get a little exercise and be outside, this group
is ideal for you. Help seed, plant, weed and landscape around the
rectory and church. You could participate in one of the group work
days scheduled through the year, or help bring a particular project
to completion.
Habitat
for Humanity
Redeemer has a dedicated group who volunteer to work on
Pittsburgh area Habitat projects.
Hospitality
Committee members provide food for our Sunday coffee hours. A schedule
is set up every three or four months. Individuals are responsible
for two or possibly three coffee hours through the year. This ministry
helps provide a sense of community at Redeemer and is greatly appreciated
by the parish.
Lectors and Chalice Bearers
Library
Redeemer has a collection of reading materials housed in
a comfortable reading room.
Men’s Shelter Dinner
We prepare and serve dinner once each month for 20-30 guests
of an overnight shelter in the East Liberty Presbyterian church.
Music and Liturgy
Redeemer has a long tradition of liturgical music, and
is blessed with an abundance of talented musicians willing to share
their gifts. The all-volunteer Senior Choir, Festival Choir and
Handbell Choir are dedicated to preserving traditional sacred music,
while introducing the congregation to the best in contemporary compositions.
Solo performances by the parish’s instrumentalists and vocalists
throughout the year provide an added dimension to the “joyous
sound” of Redeemer.
Outreach
“We are challenged to end poverty and malnutrition, to promote
world health, work for justice and peace around the world, and to
overcome racial, ethnic and religious strife.”
Reaching out to help others – not only through monetary gifts,
but also through hands-involvement – is an ongoing commitment
at Redeemer. It’s reflected in the selfless work of our Outreach
Committee, and in the personal efforts of each of us.
We support projects serving people in the local area through organizations
including the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN), and the
East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM). Under EECM’s auspices,
we prepare and serve dinner once each month for 20-30 guests of
an overnight shelter in the East Liberty Presbyterian church. We
also support the outreach efforts of Episcopal Relief and Development
and the greater Anglican communion, especially in Rwanda.
Parish Life
“Redeemer is a church that welcomes everyone, doesn’t
take itself too seriously, and allows each of us to find God in
our own way.”
Redeemerites really like to be together, and their joy in each
other’s company makes every Parish Life event a lively and
special affair. Step into the parish hall, library or meeting room
– any time a coffee hour, potluck, workshop, retreat, or group
discussion is in full swing – and feel the warmth and the
welcome!
Other Parish events held throughout the year include:
· Eucharist in the Park
· Halloween Party
· Christmas Nativity Play
· Christmas Party
· Ice Skating Party
· Easter egg hunt
· Spring Fair
· Summer Picnic
